ReGlobe welcomes Dr. Yan Shaohua from Fudan University
On 16 June 2026, the ReGlobe research group hosted Yan Shaohua from Fudan University for an in-depth exchange on the evolving dynamics of China–Europe relations and the broader geopolitical environment shaping them.
Dr. Yan, who serves as Associate Research Fellow and Deputy Director of the Center for China-Europe Relations (CCER) at Fudan University’s Institute of International Studies, shared insights from his research on economic security, strategic autonomy, and the changing role of China in European policy debates.
Discussions focused on the impact of the United States on Sino-European relations, the growing securitization of trade, technology, and supply chains, and the implications of emerging decoupling trends in sectors such as semiconductors, telecommunications and outer space.
The conversation also explored European debates on Open Strategic Autonomy, economic competitiveness, and corporate geoeconomics, as well as the future of EU–China cooperation in areas including trade, investment, and artificial intelligence policy. Participants discussed how both Europe and China are adapting to shifting geopolitical realities, with particular attention to the balance between competition, security concerns, and continued interdependence.
A recurring theme was the importance of dialogue and cooperation in the context of increased securitization and geopolitical contestation. Dr. Yan highlighted the potential for greater engagement between European and Chinese actors on shared challenges – such as AI, economic transformation, sustainable development and knowledge exchange.
The visit provided a valuable opportunity to strengthen ReGlobe’s links with leading scholars in China and to deepen ongoing discussions on the future of Europe–China relations in an increasingly fracturing international environment.
