At the end of August ReGlobe team members were in Bologna for the excellent and inspiring 18th Pan-European Conference of the European International Studies Association (EISA). Nana de Graaff and Jaša Veselinovič, together with Bastiaan van Apeldoorn and Imogen Liu, organized a section titled “Geopolitics and Economic Statecraft: Elite Strategies in a Fragmenting World Order”. Across the section’s twelve panels we discussed - with many wonderful colleagues, old and new – the geopolitical driving forces and elite strategies behind the emerging multi-polar global order, the resurgence of economic statecraft, and geoeconomic competition reshaping the highly integrated yet unevenly structured capitalist world economy.
ReGlobe team members, between them, presented seven papers (check the programme HERE), including two that are the direct result of the first year of ReGlobe research. One relates to how the notion of “geoeconomic exposure” and, in particular, its exports dimension can help elucidate conflicts over the EU’s industrial policies. The other looks at the curious case of the Netherlands and ASML going along with US export controls towards China. They have been or soon will be submitted to journals. Stay tuned!
